Product Introduction

321 Stainless Steel Sheet (2BA Finish) is a titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel flat product engineered for applications requiring resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range (427C to 816C).

The 2BA finish (bright annealed, skin-passed) provides a smooth, reflective, and scale-free surface with controlled surface roughness (Ra <= 0.4 um), minimizing surface preparation requirements prior to fabrication, welding, or secondary forming operations. Supplied in standard or custom slit dimensions per ASTM A240 and ASME SA240 specifications.

Key Features

Titanium Stabilization (Ti >= 5 x C): Prevents chromium carbide precipitation during high-temperature exposure or welding, eliminating the risk of intergranular corrosion.

Controlled 2BA Surface Finish: Bright annealed under a controlled protective atmosphere, yielding a clean, smooth, and semi-reflective surface with low initial surface defect rates.

High-Temperature Mechanical Retention: Maintains structural strength and oxidation resistance in continuous service up to 870C.

Formability: Exhibits excellent ductility and drawing properties typical of austenitic grades, suitable for roll forming, bending, and deep drawing.

Available Grades and Material Options

To support diverse engineering requirements, 321 sheet is supplied in the following metallurgical conditions:

Condition A (Annealed): Standard mill-annealed delivery state optimized for general corrosion resistance and formability.

Stabilized Heat Treatment: Solution-annealed at 950C to 1120C followed by rapid cooling to ensure complete carbide dissolution and optimal titanium distribution.

Alternative/Companion Grades:

Grade 304/304L: For standard atmospheric environments without elevated temperature exposure.

Grade 316/316L: For enhanced resistance to pitting and chloride-bearing environments.

Grade 321H: Higher carbon variant (0.04% to 0.10%) engineered for enhanced creep resistance at temperatures above 500C.

Applications

Aerospace & Exhaust Systems

Aircraft exhaust manifolds, collector rings, and firewall structures.

Petrochemical & Refining

Expansion joints, catalytic cracker units, refinery piping liners, and thermowells.

Industrial Thermal Processing

Heat exchanger tubing, annealing boxes, furnace linings, and burner components.

Pollution Control

Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system components and stack liners.

Custom Thickness and Dimensions

We supply 321 2BA stainless steel sheets in both standard mill sizes and customized dimensions tailored to specific fabrication schedules:

Thickness Tolerances: Manufactured within strict tolerances per EN ISO 9445 or ASTM A480 (e.g., +/- 0.03 mm for 1.0 mm thickness).

Length & Width Customization: Laser cutting and precision slitting services available down to width tolerances of +/- 0.1 mm.

Edge Condition: Mill Edge or Slit Edge (deburred on request).

Flatness Control: Roller-leveled sheets with maximum deviation from flatness <= 1.5 mm/m to prevent distortion during automatic laser cutting.

Quality Control and Surface Inspection

Every production lot undergoes rigorous multi-stage metallurgical and dimensional verification:

Chemical Composition Verification: Spectrometric analysis (PMI / OES) conducted per heat to verify titanium-to-carbon ratio and nickel/chromium proportions.

Mechanical Testing: Tensile, bend, and hardness testing performed in accordance with ASTM E8/E8M.

Surface Integrity Inspection:

  • Automated and manual visual inspection under 1000-lux lighting to detect micro-scratches, pits, roller marks, or oxidation scale.
  • Surface roughness (Ra) verification using contact profilometers.

Traceability: Full Mill Test Reports (MTR) provided in accordance with EN 10204 3.1, traceable via heat numbers stamped or inkjet-printed on protective interleave paper.

Packaging and Shipping

To protect the delicate 2BA bright annealed finish from transit damage and moisture-induced staining:

Interleave Protection: PVC protective film (laser-safe or standard polyethylene) applied on the finish side, or paper interleaving between individual sheets.

Packaging Structure: Moisture-resistant kraft paper wrapping, sealed with waterproof outer plastic, secured over heavy-duty wooden skids/pallets with steel strapping.

Export Compliance: ISPM 15 heat-treated wooden pallets suitable for international ocean and air freight.

Loading Capacity: Secure container loading configurations up to 25 metric tons per 20GP container with blocking and bracing to prevent shifting.

FAQ

Q: How does 321 stainless steel differ from 304 for high-temperature applications?

A: Grade 321 contains titanium added at a minimum of five times the carbon content. This prevents chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during service or welding in the 427C to 816C range, preventing intergranular corrosion where 304 would be susceptible.

Q: Can 321 2BA sheets be laser cut without edge deformation?

A: Yes. Our tight flatness control and low internal residual stress from precision skin-pass rolling ensure minimal thermal distortion during fiber laser or plasma cutting.

Q: Are Mill Test Reports (MTRs) supplied with each shipment?

A: Yes. Every shipment includes an EN 10204 3.1 certified MTR detailing actual chemical composition, mechanical test results, and heat treatment parameters.

Q: What is the standard protective film specification for the 2BA surface?

A: We apply laser-grade PVC protective films designed to prevent scratching during stamping or cutting, which can be cleanly peeled off without adhesive residue.
