Product Introduction

Precision 316L Stainless Steel Sheet is a general-purpose martensitic stainless steel containing a nominal 12% chromium. This grade provides balanced corrosion resistance and high mechanical strength after thermal processing. Unlike austenitic grades (such as 304), 316L is magnetic in both annealed and hardened conditions and responds directly to heat treatment to achieve specific hardness and wear resistance levels.

Supplied in accordance with international ASTM and ASME manufacturing standards, our plates serve industrial applications requiring moderate corrosion resistance combined with high tensile strength and impact toughness.

Key Features

High Hardenability: Achieves high mechanical strength and wear resistance through quenching and tempering.

Corrosion Resistance: Performs adequately in mild atmospheres, fresh water, organic acids, and mild chemicals (not recommended for severe chloride or marine environments).

Magnetic Properties: Fully magnetic across all structural conditions.

Machinability: Readily machinable in the annealed condition; highly resistant to machining post-heat treatment.

Weldability: Air-hardening characteristics require strict pre-heating (150°C to 260°C) and post-weld annealing to prevent micro-cracking.

Available Grades and Material Options

Condition States:

Annealed (Soft state, optimized for laser cutting, shearing, and heavy machining).

Quenched and Tempered (Hardened state, optimized for direct wear and structural load application).

Alternative Martensitic Grades Available:

316LS (UNS S316L08): Low-carbon variant (0.08% max) that resists hardening during cooling from high temperatures, suited for welded structural components.

420 (UNS S42000): Higher carbon content (0.15% - 0.40%) for increased hardness and edge retention in cutting tools.

FAQ

Q: Can Precision 316L Stainless Steel Sheet be welded without preheating?

A: No. Due to its martensitic structure, 316L air-hardens rapidly from welding temperatures and is prone to micro-cracking if welded in the as-received condition. Pre-heating to 150°C - 260°C and performing immediate post-weld annealing are mandatory.

Q: Is 316L stainless steel suitable for marine or high-chloride environments?

A: No. With a nominal 12% chromium content, 316L provides limited resistance against pitting and crevice corrosion compared to austenitic grades like 304 or 316. For marine or chemical exposure, higher-alloy grades must be selected.

Q: What documentation is provided with the material?

A: Every shipment includes a traceable EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate verifying exact chemical composition and mechanical properties against ASTM A240 requirements.

Q: What is the typical lead time for custom cut-to-size plates?

A: Standard inventory stock ships within 3 to 5 business days. Orders requiring specialized laser cutting or heat treatment typically dispatch within 10 to 15 business days, depending on processing complexity and order volume.
